Teachers Working Together

Last Tuesday  the 27th of August,  Auckland Normal Intermediate School hosted the ACCoS Flexible Group 2 Initiative combined maths professional learning group session. The focus was on bringing teachers together to share their learning around effective strategies for the teaching of Mathematics.

The afternoon’s session was planned and coordinated by Abby Cavanaugh, In School Leader from ANI. She and her PLG team planned and catered for 28 teachers from across the initiative.

We cannot stress enough the importance of school leaders being actively involved as one of the key successes for the initiative. Again it was heartening to see so many members of school’s management teams being present and active during the session.

The afternoon embraced teachers working together across schools.
Abby set up a key question Do our schools have a shared understanding of what Flexible Grouping means? This was one identified strategy that has a great effect in mathematics. We have spent the year focusing on this strategy and have previously run a special session bringing in guest speakers to help with our understanding and professional growth.

Following this, we spent time working on a mathematics task using a flexible grouping approach. The same image was given to everyone, with different tasks attached to it e.g. calculate the area and what type of mathematical questions could you ask about this. This way of grouping ensured that everyone was engaged in the task and contributed equally.

To end the night, we had a few members of ANI share their thoughts and work, in relation to flexible grouping. This rounded off our conversations while providing food for thought moving forward. 
The afternoon passed quickly with teachers sharing their learning with colleagues across the schools and teachers appreciated the time to get to connect with others outside their own schools.
Our time together was both informative and fun.

Pursuing a mathematical mindset ... MATHS WEEK ART @ CPDS

The challenge was to produce a piece of art...any art...with mathematics as the key component. Open to all year groups, no requirement other than creativity and a sense of fun!  This display shows work from every year group at CPDS including: tessellations, 3D collages, monsters made from maths shapes and pigpen codes. A huge thank you to all the students who embraced the idea of maths and art - your work speaks for itself!

A-mathing Race 2019




On Wednesday 14th of August as part of National Mathematics Week, Pupils and teachers from Newmarket School joined, Auckland Normal Intermediate and Parnell District School for a few hours of collaborative learning.



It was a dark and stormy night...

No, really. It was.

Fortunately, the new day arrived refreshingly free of moisture and and gloom. Perfect conditions for an A-mathing Race through the leafy suburb of Parnell.

Preparations had been afoot for many months as teachers conspired to create a fiendishly  challenging maths event for Maths Week 2019, based on the popular television show of a similar name.

Map coordinates were plotted. Clues were cunningly hid. Fingers firmly crossed.

Three schools, Auckland Normal Intermediate, Newmarket School, and the hosts, Parnell District School, supplied intrepid teams to take part in this now annual event for our ACCoS Kāhui Ako.

Four teams were chosen comprising students from all three schools. Each team was allocated a teacher from the contributing schools act as a recorder and map-holder. There were introductions and a briefing, and then we were off.

The first challenge was a gift for any budding engineers in the room: constructing a 30cm 10cm bridge out of nothing more than a packet of popsicle sticks and a roll of Sellotape. The bridge had to be sturdy enough to bear the weight of a can of Watties Hearty Beef Soup.

There was much scratching of heads until light bulb moments were translated into action. Teamwork and clear communication were the order of the day. As each team’s bridge passed the Hearty Beef Soup test, they were given coordinates to the next challenge.

And wouldn’t you know it? Just as the first teams sprinted off in search of that first clue, the weather gods decided a little dowsing of participants would add a certain frisson to  proceedings. Dampened, but undeterred, our heroes set their sights on the prize and tarried forth without delay. Their determination was soon rewarded as the first clue was spotted in the trees. In a matter of minutes, the problem was read, calculations done, and coordinates to the next clue plotted.

The next clue proved to be elusive for everybody. However, it did level the playing field as all teams eventually converged at the given coordinates in what was turning into a fruitless search for that red card with the clue on it. After much running around in all directions, it was decided that there was nothing for it but to make a call back to base for more intelligence on the matter.

Intelligence received and actioned, all teams redoubled their efforts to locate the next clue. Fortunately, this, and the subsequent clues, proved to be a much more straight-forward proposition - for most teams. One team decided to get in some extra cross country practice in by steaming up St Stephen’s Ave. rather than turning off to the correct location. Realising their mistake too late, they turned around and made their weary way back to base.

Meanwhile back at base, the other teams were applying themselves to the final challenge: working from 2D to 3D - using multilink cubes to recreate the models represented on a card.

Once these were completed and answers to the challenges had been checked, the prize giving ceremony (with much-welcomed ice blocks) began.

Judging by the smiles on faces, it is safe to say that a good time was had by all.

We extend the heartiest of thanks to the team at PDS - particularly Masina Gagamoe - for their hard work and hospitality. It is this kind of event that epitomises the spirit of COLs - students AND teachers showing initiative, collaborating, and celebrating.

Pursuing a mathematical mindset ... MATHS WEEK 2019 -Collaborating across schools


On Tuesday this week a group of senior students from Cornwall Park school went to Maungawhau school to get involved in an outdoor maths trail as part of Maths Week. The students were mixed together into groups of 4 and had fun  together solving problems outside of the classroom. 


 I didn’t know that nature contained Maths as well - e.g that there could be so much Maths in a single blade of grass."
 " I enjoyed doing Maths outside the classroom and I really enjoyed discovering Maths in nature and man-made stuff."
On the Wednesday, as part of the same Maths Week collaboration, 30 students from Maungawhau came to Cornwall Park school to take part in a problem solving challenge. 


For over an hour  the 60 students worked together in mixed groups, bringing their problem solving skills to bear on a range of different types of mathematical challenges.  

Although we ran this event as a 'competition' we were more interested in the students connecting and communicating - which they did brilliantly!  The feedback from the students, teachers and accompanying parents was really positive. 
The students showed  genuine enjoyment in the process of persevering together through some tricky questions. A big thanks to all those involved.
